Anyone with a business always wants to know how to attract good staff. Having spoken to numerous friends and acquaintances over the years that run their own businesses I have often heard them say, it is hard to get good staff these days. The problem is while they continue to believe this, this is exactly what they will get. What ever you believe becomes a subconscious conviction in your mind and that is what you will attract. By changing your subconscious mind you can draw the things you really want into your life or towards your business when you believe in a new conviction. When you believe you can attract good staff, you will be lead to the best possible ways to achieve this.

The fact that you have somehow been lead to reading this article on how to attract good staff means on some level you do believe it is possible to attract good staff and you are correct, it is most definitely possible. Attracting good staff when you need them comes down to building a good reputation just like you want to have a good reputation so you will attract many new and previous clients.

I would have to say that the main reason why businesses have trouble when considering how to attract good quality staff is they think that money is what will attract good staff. Now I am not saying that money is not a factor, it is a factor and one of the main factors but don’t be fooled into thinking money supersedes everything else when it comes to attracting the right staff for your business. What you will attract with money is an opportunist first and foremost, he or she will be drawn by the money and may do a good job but if they don’t like the working environment that you have created, they will be secretly looking for a better opportunity and when they get, you know what will happen.

If you build up a reputation with your staff and create a positive working environment which allows them to feel comfortable and as stress free as possible they are more likely to stay and word of this will get around and do not ever forget that, word always gets around. In relation to the stress free environment I just mentioned I do mean that as high stress levels lead to poor productivity and a high turnover of staff, although some jobs are inherently stressful and the staff who work these types of jobs know there will always be an element of stress but as an employer it would be wise to not add unnecessary stress.

Spending time listening to your staff and their needs will help you run a tighter operation and by incorporating some of their ideas you will win them over as they can see you are proactive in regards to their suggestions and you will build team spirit. It is this type of team spirit that fosters a warm working environment, makes staff want to stay and be a part of this operation and helps to attract good staff when you are looking for new staff.

If you are the manager of boss of a business and a prospective employee comes for an interview, nothing will impress him more than knowing he will be an integral part of a successful team. Let him or her know that it is staff working together that built this business, it is not a one man show and he will have to perform at his best to be a part of it. However, if he shows his truth worth he will be rewarded for his efforts.

In Thailand where I currently live, most staff of almost all businesses and companies receive a one month salary bonus at the end of each full year they work for that company. I say most staff because they need to follow certain protocol to receive that bonus such as turning up for work on time each day, achieving certain targets set for them and other factors but let me say, almost everybody gets that bonus because they are aware of how important it is to perform at their best at all times. Most companies also shut down for one full day per year and have a staff day out fully paid for by the company and this only serves to build team spirit and a stronger bond between staff and management since it is compulsory for all staff and management of all levels to participate in activities together without any talk of work on that day.

If you want to know how to attract good staff it is important to understand that what you give is what you get in this life. If you treat your staff well, they will reciprocate with hard work and integrity. You cannot cheat the universe, which basically means you get what you give and everything comes back to you at some time or another.

A friend of mine recently told me she quit her job. I hadn’t spoken to her in a while and was shocked to hear this since the last time we spoke she loved her job. What happened was, a new General Manager was appointed at the hotel she worked at as a receptionist and from day one he began talking down to the staff, calling early morning meetings with the other managers of each department within the hotel and then not arriving to the meeting himself, knowing all the other managers were waiting for him. He didn’t even show common courtesy by calling to say he wouldn’t make it to the meeting but he would verbally abuse any staff in front of all other staff if they were a minute late when he did bother to show up for the early morning meeting. His bad temper and belittling of the staff in front of guests of the hotel was demoralizing for the staff and upsetting to the guests as you could imagine.

I am sure you can guess what started to happen at my friend’s hotel. The very first person to quit was the personal assistant to the General Manager and he had been working there for many years under a few different managers. After he left the mass exodus of the staff began. I am sure you could imagine what kind of reputation this hotel now has and attracting good staff for them would be impossible. If a new person did start working there, on the very first day the other staff would inform them of what a terrible manager they had since that is what staff do, they talk to each other and their friends outside the hotel, which brings me to my next very important point on how to attract good hard working staff.

Just before she left her hotel job she put the word around with her other friends who worked similar positions in other hotels and she finally landed a great job in the same position with a great boss who did make her work very hard but who fosters a healthy environment for her and the other staff. Her friend who told her about this new job works at the hotel also and put the good word out that this is a great place to work. The funny thing is my friend even took a slight pay cut but because she was so miserable at her old job, the money was not the most important thing.

This is one way how to attract good staff, treat your current staff well and respect their effort and when you need someone new, your staff will only vouch for someone who they believe will be an asset to the company. You don’t even need to advertise blindly in newspapers etc for new staff if your current staff are on your side, they will do the prospecting for you. If however, you do need to advertise you can honestly say, the staff that work for you love their job and the reason is because it is a great place to work. Your employees will vouch for that in the same way they will only recommend good potential staff in the first place.
