Do Opposites Attract?

Do opposites attract? This is something everyone will have their own opinion on and an old saying regarding relationships between people goes “opposites attract”. However, in my opinion do opposites attract? I would have to say no and in this article I will give a number of reasons why I don’t think opposites attract in most cases. Of course in some cases opposites attract but there are always exceptions to the rule when it comes to relationships and people getting along. 

So why do I think opposites don’t attract when it comes to most successful relationships? One reason opposites don’t attract is although when you first meet, your relationship might get off to a flying start since you are both so different and have a lot to talk about, after a while you will be both moving in different directions. For example if you are an outdoors person and your partner is the opposite and prefers to be inside eventually this won’t work as when you have free time away from work or your other responsibilities you will both want to be doing different things when this should be your together time. I’m not saying you can’t be apart, being apart some of the time is healthy for a relationship but you need to have some similar interests for your relationship to go the distance.

Do opposites attract when it comes time for a holiday together? The reason I specifically mention taking holidays is this is an important and necessary time for you to be together. Holidays take planning, they are something you look forward to and they cost money, sometimes a holiday can cost a lot of money as well and most often than not you will both contribute to the cost of the holiday. So looking at the concept of do opposites attract when taking all these factors I just mentioned into account, opposites certainly don’t attract. If your partner is a water lover and enjoys relaxing type holidays on the beach as their favorite type of holiday and their chance to relax when they get time away from work it will certainly conflict if you are the opposite and prefer a holiday inland and don’t want to relax.

I once dated a girl for about six months before we took a holiday together or even any extended period of more than a few days but during that time we were both very busy with our respective jobs. We really didn’t get to know eachother in a relaxed setting as we only ever saw eachother for a period of hours at night or sometimes we spent the day together on the weekends for those six months. When we finally took a two week holiday together to a beach resort that we both agreed we wanted to do together we ended up spending most of our time apart since we really didn’t want to do the same things in our holiday time. However, we got on quite well when we were both only seeing eachother during our busy working life. So in this case do opposites attract? We made a mutual decision to break up not long after the holiday since we knew our relationship was not going to work due to us being such opposites. We didn’t even realize how opposite we were until we went on holidays together. It was very disappointing for us both because we had never really spent any length of time together in those six months.

Do opposites attract when it comes to your friendships with other people? Unfortunately if you love motorbikes and your friends do to but your partner doesn’t like loud noises and feels uncomfortable and unsafe when traveling on the road it will be difficult to sustain a relationship when are you are both so opposite.

Do opposites attract when it comes to exercising and the food you like to eat? If you are a gym junkie and your partner hates to exercise and prefers take away pizza to your skinless chicken breast with vegetables and rice you will find yet again whether opposites attract. We all spend a considerable amount of our lives eating and if you both differ immensely on the amount or types of food you eat and your eagerness to exercise it would be difficult to stay together for the long term.

Although people who are slightly opposite in different ways certainly do attract since it gives you some space and freedom to spend time apart and then cherish the times when you do take the time to spend together while engaged in activities you do both enjoy, if you are both considerably opposite it will undoubtedly make life difficult to stay happily together. Having said this, it’s all about giving it a go to see if you are compatible even if you may be generally very opposite people but hey, that’s all part of the fun in this uncertain and unpredictable world we share.
